Agnès Belaisch Joins Barings Investment Institute as Chief European Strategist

Barings, one of the world’s leading financial services firms, today announced that Agnès Belaisch will join Barings and the Barings Investment Institute as Chief European Strategist, effective December 16. In her newly created role, Belaisch will be responsible for providing macroeconomic and geopolitical guidance and context to the firm’s investment teams, helping them navigate markets and identify synergies across our various platforms and strategies. She will report to Christopher Smart, Chief Global Strategist and Head of the Barings Investment Institute, and will be based in London.

“As Barings continues to grow, Agnès brings a rare mix of investment expertise and policy perspective to the firm,” said Smart. “Specifically, she will help the Institute build out its macroeconomic and geopolitical analysis of Europe, expand its bandwidth as an internal marketplace of investment ideas, and develop analyses of long-term market trends for clients, business partners and outside audiences. We looking forward to utilizing her talents to build upon the firm’s broad expertise and international footprint.”

Belaisch joins Barings from the London School of Economics, where she was a Senior Visiting Fellow exploring how investing in social and environmental projects can generate market returns. She has worked in asset management, including positions with Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, where she was Head of Sovereign Fixed Income, and Threadneedle Investments, where she was Head of Emerging Market Strategy and a Fund Manager. She also has experience in the public sector, including her time as the Head of Economic and Market Analysis with the European Stability Mechanism and spending 10 years at the IMF, working with governments from a number of countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Belaisch has a PhD in Economics from New York University and master’s degrees in Finance and Econometrics from Paris I-Sorbonne. She is fluent in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese.
