Why Eastern Europe?
The sustainable competitive advantage many regional economies enjoy through oil and gas exploration and production continues to drive the investment case for Eastern Europe. Over and above this, domestic demand is growing and the long-term outlook here is supported by underleveraged and well educated consumers and financial institutions with continually improving corporate governance.
Summary fund objective
The investment objective of the Fund is to achieve long-term capital appreciation through investment in a diversified portfolio of securities of issuers located in or with a significant exposure to the emerging markets of Europe. (Please refer to the Prospectus for the full investment objective and policy.)
More than providing the potential for attractive returns, we also believe that Eastern Europe offers investors good value for money opportunities. Looking ahead, we expect strong performance with the low interest rate environment in the West providing a strong underpin for commodity-rich and well-priced markets such as Russia.
We have been investing in EMEA equity markets for a number of years and both the Barings Eastern Europe Fund and the Baring Russia Fund have established strong track records since their respective launches in 1996 and 1997.
Our experience of investing in emerging markets and fundamental research-based approach help us to compensate for the lack of transparency of these markets and to build confidence in the companies we invest in.
