Chairman, CEO and President, Barings LLC
Mike Freno is Chairman, CEO and President, Barings LLC, a $354+ billion global financial services firm with offices across the U.S., Europe, Australia and Asia. His experience canvasses two decades on the buy-side, focusing on both equity and debt investments. Previously, he was head of Global Markets. Mike is known for being a trusted partner to clients with a focus on the long-term.
He is a member of the Barings Board of Directors; Chairman of both the Global High Yield Allocation Committee and the Global Investment Grade Allocation Committee; and a member of the Global Distressed Committee. Mike is also Chairman of the Board of Barings BDC, Inc., (NYSE: BBDC), an external business development company managed by Barings. Mike also serves as an Executive Sponsor for the Barings Black Alliance employee resource group.
Mike holds a B.A. from Furman University and an M.B.A. from Wake Forest University.
Thomas Bavin, CFA
Head of Client and Product Management
Tom Bavin is the Head of Client and Product Management where he oversees the Client Portfolio Management, Product Structuring, Client Service and RFP functions across all regions and asset classes. He is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
Tom joined Barings in 2010 as a Product Manager for Structured Credit and later also served in the same capacity for the Investment Grade platform. Before joining Barings, he was a credit trader at Standish Asset Management.
Tom holds a B.A. in Managerial Economics from Stonehill College and is a member of the CFA Institute.
Tom is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Boston Securities Analyst Society and he also served as a derivatives and fixed income instructor in their CFA preparatory program.
Chief Operating Officer
Steve Boehm is Barings’ Chief Operating Officer and a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team. He leads Barings’ data, technology and operations teams, focused on end-to-end customer experience and growth.
Steve has more than two decades of experience in technology-driven businesses, financial services, global operations, digital payments and merger integration. Prior to joining the firm in 2020, Steve was a Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at AvidXchange, where he led the company’s transformation through a period of hypergrowth and customer experience redesign. Previously, Steve served for six years as Senior Vice President, Global Customer Experience at eBay. Earlier in his career, he was Senior Vice President, Global Product Management and Innovation at First Data Corp. and Executive Vice President, Merger Integration for the Wells Fargo/Wachovia merger. He held other senior leadership roles at Wachovia and at Visa.
Steve holds a B.B.A. from James Madison University and an M.B.A. from George Mason University.
Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer
Chasity Boyce is Barings’ Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, responsible for driving the firm’s diversity outcomes by focusing on recruiting, talent development, retention and policies to build an inclusive workplace. She is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
She joined Barings from Heitman LLC, a real estate investment management firm, where she served as Vice President, Head of Inclusion and Diversity. Prior to Heitman, Chasity spent three years at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP as Diversity and Inclusion Manager and was the Associate General Counsel to Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.
An Adjunct Professor at Loyola University Chicago’s School of Law since 2016, Chasity is focused on diversity in the law profession, and is Co-Founder and Founding Board Member of the Diverse Attorney Pipeline Program (DAPP). She serves on a number of boards and community organizations, including the Women’s Bar Foundation and the Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Board of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism.
Chasity received her A.B. in Public Policy from Duke University and her J.D. from Howard University School of Law.
Nathan Bragg, CFA
Head of Strategy
Nathan Bragg is Head of Strategy where he is responsible for helping shape the strategic vision for the firm and supporting strategic acquisitions. Barings’ strategy function works to position the organization to accomplish overall firm objectives globally. Nathan and his team use external market factors, competitive intelligence, and current firm positioning to help set the priorities for the organization. He is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
Prior to joining the firm in 2017, Nathan was a Director at Casey Quirk, a practice of Deloitte Consulting, where he worked with a wide range of asset managers on their strategies relating to growth, product and distribution. Prior to that, he was a Research Analyst at Integrity Research Associates and a Senior Research Analyst at Greenwich Associates.
Nathan holds a B.A. in History from Duke University and is a member of the CFA Institute.
Dr. Ghadir Cooper
Global Head of Equities
Dr. Ghadir Cooper is Global Head of Equities. She leads a team of experienced investors specializing in global, international, emerging and small cap equities. She is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership team and a member of the European Management Team.
Previously, Ghadir was Head of the EMEA & Global Frontiers Team and lead manager on the Barings Eastern European Fund. Having joined Barings as part of the Global Emerging Equity Team in 1997, Ghadir was appointed a Director in 2001. Prior to joining the firm’s Emerging Equity Team, Ghadir worked at BZW Asset Management, where she was an investment analyst focusing on the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America regions.
Ghadir holds a BSc and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Durham University and is fluent in Arabic.
Global Head of Legal
Jill Dinerman is Global Head of Legal where she oversees the global legal function advising the firm on a wide range of legal and business issues and providing support for all of its investment teams. She is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
Jill has been a member of the Barings legal team since 2011, holding several roles in corporate governance and supporting the U.S. Fixed Income team. Before joining Barings in 2011, she was a Senior Associate at Katten Munchin Rosenman. She started her career as an Associate at Pillsbury Winthrop.
She holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland and a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School. Active in the community, she has served on the boards of several local Jewish agencies and on the board of Girls on the Run Charlotte, a nonprofit that empowers young women so they can activate their limitless potential.
Chief Administrative Officer & Chief Legal Officer
Sheldon Francis is Barings’ Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Legal Officer and a member of Barings Senior Leadership Team. He is responsible for the general legal affairs, compliance, enterprise risk, internal audit, procurement and vendor management, and facilities. He is also the Chairman of Barings Europe. Prior to his current role, he served as a Co-General Counsel and lead in-house attorney for Babson Capital Management’s U.S. Bank Loan, High Yield and Distressed Investments groups.
Sheldon has more than 22 years of legal experience, encompassing all aspects of the investment management industry, corporate finance and corporate restructurings. Prior to joining the firm in 2006, he was a member of Helms Mulliss and Wicker (n/k/a McGuire Woods), and began his legal career as an associate at Bass, Berry and Sims PLC.
Sheldon is a member of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, a 501c(3) dedicated to providing leadership for sports-based initiatives that result in a positive impact on the economy and quality of life in the Charlotte region. He is also an Executive Sponsor of the Barings Black Alliance employee resource group. Sheldon holds a B.A. from Duke University and a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law.
Head of Research, Analytics and Quant
Colin Gordon is Barings’ Head of Research, Analytics and Quant, responsible for overseeing portfolio risk, analytics and quantitative modeling across the platform, in addition to the development of a global research platform across North America, Europe and Asia. He also oversees the Barings Investment Institute and is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
Colin has worked in the industry since 1995. Prior to joining the firm in 2015, Colin worked as an asset management consultant focusing on Regulatory Capital investment strategies. Prior to that, Colin was Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at JP Morgan Asset Management and Bear Stearns Asset Management, focusing on asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities. Colin began his career trading emerging market derivatives for Credit Suisse First Boston in London.
Colin holds a dual B.A. in Economics and English Literature from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Columbia University. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association.
Chief Financial Officer
Patrick Hoefling is Barings’ Chief Financial Officer, providing oversight and direction for all corporate finance functions including, treasury, financial planning and analysis, corporate accounting/tax, public fund accounting, and corporate strategy. Patrick is also a member of the Barings Senior Leadership Team.
Prior to becoming CFO, Patrick served as the client portfolio services liaison with MassMutual, covering their entire portfolio. He also held the title of Corporate Treasurer and Global Head of Financial Planning and Analysis. Those roles coordinated daily operational, cash and accounting needs for the firm’s investment teams, sales function, and other operational and support areas.
He helped develop Barings Social Impact, which oversees our community involvement and charitable spend. He is a board member and the Treasurer of Barings’ Social Impact Fund.
Prior to joining the firm in 2008, he worked in the Private Client Advisory Tax Group at Deloitte (then known as Deloitte & Touche) and a Charlotte-based hedge fund.
Patrick holds a B.S. in Accountancy from Villanova University and a Master of Accountancy from North Carolina State University.
Head of Global Public Fixed Income
Martin Horne is Barings’ Head of Global Public Fixed Income, a group that incorporates the Global High Yield, Investment Grade, Structured Credit and Emerging Markets currency, rates, sovereign and corporate debt investment teams. Martin is also Chairman of the European High Yield Investment Committee, Vice Chairman of the Global High Yield Allocation Committee, a member of the European Management Team and a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team. He is also an Executive Sponsor of the Barings Black Talent Network employee resource group, as well as the Charter for Black Talent in Finance and the Professions in the U.K.
Martin has worked in the industry since 1993 and his experience has encompassed the mid cap, structured credit, investment grade and leveraged finance markets. His roles at Barings also incorporated roles as senior portfolio manager in cornerstone strategies, and head of research for the European High Yield Group.
Prior to joining the firm in 2002, Martin was a member of the European Leverage team at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein where he focused on lead arranging and underwriting senior, mezzanine and high yield for financial sponsor-driven leverage buyouts throughout Europe. He has also held positions at KPMG Corporate Finance, where he advised on complex debt transactions, National Australia Bank, in their corporate and structured credit team and National Westminster Bank’s corporate banking unit. Martin previously served on the board of directors of the Loan Market Association and holds a B.A. in Economics from Reading University.
Chief Communications Officer
Cheryl Krauss is Barings’ Chief Communications Officer and a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team. Cheryl is responsible for driving strategic direction and oversight for executive and internal communications, client communications, social media and media relations globally. She serves on the Steering Committee for Out & Allies, Barings’ LGBT+ employee resource group.
Prior to joining Barings in 2019, Cheryl was Global Head of Communications for BNY Mellon across Digital, Technology, Operations, Client, Incident and Cyber disciplines and Global Head of Communications, Clearing, Markets, Client Management and Issuer Services. Previously, she served as Bain & Company’s Worldwide Senior Director, Public Relations, where she was responsible for the firm’s global communications.
Before joining Bain, Cheryl was a Managing Director at Burson Cohn & Wolfe (BCW), in a range of agency and in-house communications roles. She started her career as journalist and photojournalist with ABC and NBC affiliates in Miami and West Palm Beach, and CBS News, Inc. in New York.
Cheryl is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society, a community of CCOs at the world’s leading companies. Cheryl holds a B.S. from the University of Miami and studied art history at the University of Sydney.
Global Head of Private Assets
Eric Lloyd is Head of Private Assets where he is responsible for managing all aspects of Barings’ global private assets businesses, including real estate debt and equity, multi-asset, middle market direct lending, infrastructure debt, corporate private placements, private asset-backed securities, whole loan residential mortgages, private equity funds and co-investments and private equity real assets. He also oversees strategic relationship management, is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team and serves as a Board member and Chief Executive Officer of Barings BDC, Inc. (NYSE: BBDC). Eric is an Executive Sponsor of both the Veteran’s and the Out & Allies employee resource groups.
Eric has worked in the industry since 1990 and his experience has encompassed leadership positions in investment management, investment banking, leveraged finance and risk management. Prior to joining Barings in 2013, he served as Head of Market and Institutional Risk for Wells Fargo, was on Wells Fargo’s Management Committee and was a member of the Board of Directors of Wells Fargo Securities. Before the acquisition of Wachovia, Eric worked in Wachovia’s Global Markets Investment Banking division and served on the division’s Operating Committee, where he held various leadership positions, including Head of Wachovia’s Global Leveraged Finance Group.
Eric holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Virginia, McIntire School of Commerce.
Chief Human Resources Officer
Caroline Mandeville is Barings’ Chief Human Resources Officer and is responsible for developing and executing human resource strategies, processes and policies in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of the firm. She is a member of Barings’ Senior Leadership Team.
Previously, Caroline spent seven years at Nuveen/TIAA, most recently as Senior Vice President Human Resources, TIAA Client Services and Technology. Prior to Nuveen, Caroline spent eight years at The Hartford Financial Services in organizational effectiveness, talent management and acquisition roles and four years at MassMutual Financial Group.
Caroline holds a B.S. in Human Resource Management and M.S. in Management with a concentration in Human Resources from Wilmington University, and an M.B.A from Salve Regina University.
Head of Asia Pacific, Head of Global Business Development Group
Duncan Robertson is Barings’ Head of Asia Pacific and Head of Global Business Development. He is a member of Barings Senior Leadership Team. Duncan’s responsibilities include setting the firm’s strategic direction in Asia, and leading a team of professionals spanning six countries across the region to deliver investment solutions and service to Barings’ Asian client base. In his role overseeing global sales and marketing activities, Duncan is responsible for the firm’s business development, marketing and client service efforts. Throughout his time at the firm, he has been actively involved in all aspects of the institutional, retail and wealth distribution businesses.
Duncan has worked in the finance industry since 1991. Prior to joining the firm in 2008, he oversaw all fixed income distribution activities for Merrill Lynch in Australia and New Zealand. Before joining Merrill Lynch, he worked for Westpac Banking Corporation in the areas of corporate and structured finance. Duncan holds a Bachelor of Business from RMIT University, is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
