No Blue Period: Art as an Alternative Real Asset Investment

Technologies such as blockchain may soon enable retail and institutional investors to own shares in major paintings and other art forms.

Recent art auctions have included a number of record-breaking transactions, ranging from complete collections to a single piece of non-fungible token (NFT) crypto-art. 

The contemporary art category saw an annualized return of 13.6% over a 25-year period (1995–2020), compared to 8.9% for the S&P 500 Total Return.
