General risk factors

The information on this website is issued by Baring Asset Management Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
Before investing, you should read all the relevant documents, such as Report and Accounts and Prospectus, which specify the particular risks associated with investment in the Funds, together with any specific restrictions applying and the basis of dealing.

Investment in Hedge Funds involves a high degree of risk and is suitable only for investors who are in a position to take such a risk.

Investment involves risks.  The value of any investments and any income generated may go down as well as up and is not guaranteed. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. Changes in rates of exchange may have an adverse effect on the value, price or income of an investment.

Where permitted, the Fund(s) may use leverage and/or short selling techniques. This can, in certain circumstances, cause the value of the Fund(s) portfolio to depreciate at a greater rate than if such techniques were not used, which in turn could result in significant losses to the Funds.

The Fund(s) may from time to time utilise both exchange-traded and over-the-counter futures and options as part of their investment policy and for hedging purposes. These instruments can be highly volatile, involve certain special risks and expose investors to a high risk of loss. The low initial margin deposits normally required to establish a position in such instruments permit a high degree of leverage. As a result, a relatively small movement in the price of a contract may result in a profit or a loss that is high in proportion to the amount of funds actually placed as initial margin and may result in unlimited further loss exceeding any margin deposited. Furthermore, when used for hedging purposes there may be an imperfect correlation between these instruments and the investments or market sectors being hedged. Transactions in over-the-counter derivatives may involve additional risk as there is no exchange market on which to close out an open position. It may be impossible to liquidate an existing position, to assess the value of a position or to assess the exposure to risk.

Underlying investments may be illiquid and not readily realisable. The registration and settlement arrangements in emerging markets may be inefficient than in more mature markets so the operational risks of investing are higher. Political risks and adverse economic circumstances are likely to arise within emerging markets putting the value of investments at risk. Exposure to a single geographic region may increase volatility.

An investment in a Fund therefore carries substantial risk and is suitable only for persons who can assume the risk of losing their entire investment.
Investment in a Fund is not intended to be a complete investment program for any investor. An investment should be viewed as a medium to long-term investment. As part of your long term investment planning you should consider diversifying your portfolio by investing in a range of investments and asset classes.
