Managing Director, Head of Fund and GP Financings
Richard Spencer has spent 34 years of his 37-year career at Barings with leadership roles across multiple private credit and equity platforms. His responsibilities have encompassed strategic planning, business development, team construction, origination, investment and portfolio management. Prior to taking on his latest project of building a new alternative credit business, areas of leadership have included Head of the Fixed Income Restructuring Practice (1992-1997), Co-Head of Private Placements (1997-2000), founding Co-Head of the Mezzanine and Private Equity Group (2000-2011), and the founding Head of the Funds and Co-Investment Group (2011-2022), a diversified private equity platform. He sits on several investment committees for Barings and MassMutual. He also sits on three Barings’ valuation committees.
He has served as Vice President of two public closed-end funds, Babson Capital Corporate Investors and Babson Capital Participation Investors, Managing Partner for four mezzanine and private equity funds, the Tower Square Series, and one real asset fund. Starting in 2000, Richard served for 17 years as Barings’ sole voting member on an investment committee for a group of absolute return funds co-managed with Tennenbaum Capital Partners. Richard holds a B.A. in economics and history from Bucknell University, an M.B.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo and is a member of the CFA Institute.
